person believed to be missing, a woman who worked there. here's cnn's ted roll lands. >> reporter: the explosion which witnesses say could be felt blocks away engulfed jj's restaurants. flames towered into the sky and black smoke could be seen for miles. >> we live two blocks down and we felt our building shake and we thought a car ran into our apartment. >> reporter: there were reports of the smell of gas an hour before the explosion. fortunately several people inside the restaurant were evacuated just minutes before the blast. the cause is still under investigation, but according to the gas company, a contractor doing underground work may have struck a natural gas line. after the fire was put out, dogs were brought in in case there were additional victims. >> i would fear there are fatalities in a situation like this. when we got to the scene we had a fully involved restaurant that had probably several patrons inside at the time of the incident. that's why we're here searching as we are. >> the injured ranged from people hit by flying debris to those who suffered severe burns an

go through anything this painful. >> she really struggled. cnn nichelle turner live for us this morning. >> a very talented and troubled life she led. mindy mccready recently was seeking help. checking into rehab earlier this month she appeared with dr. drew on his show, celebrity rehab. as far as he knew, she was trying to get better. he spoke to don lemon last night. >> she had actually been doing very well. things looking up for her. she had children with a boyfriend who ended up killing himself a few weeks ago. she was struggling after that. actually admitted herself to a psychiatric facility. and there is a cautionary tale about the stigma of mental illness and the way the public attacks celebrities who take care of themselves. she became so fierceful of the stigma and the way people responding to her being hospitalized that she actually checked herself out prematurely and now we have what we have. >> at the heart of mccready's struggle, she leaves two kids without their mother. 6 years old and 10 months old. that's the heart-breaking aspect to the tragedy. soledad, mc

, remember something too, part of what you see when you turn on cnn or other stations are people in america projecting their cultural kind of assumptions on to south africa. i saw somebody the other night, may have been on this show say, well, he didn't call 911, which factually was not correct. they have something there. but the person he would have called is perfectly normal according to people i know in south africa, is who you would call. so it is not the american system. but i think this guy has a pretty good defense, based on what i talked to, people in south africa, his kind of paranoia, his fear of crime, i don't think that's something that is so outlandish. >> mark, let me ask you, the prosecutor has been trying to portray pistorius as a flight risk. the fact that he doesn't recognize his crime, the idea that he is prone to violence. do you think that a solid argument against bail? >> no, i think the opposite. i think what the magistrate replied, is why wouldn't he have every incentive in the world to clear his name. and he's got a very able defense team. i think that's very compel
